Fishing been pretty good this week, don't
forget your camera.
Lets
go catch a fish, inside, outside, from the bridges, causeways, river walks,
lots of areas to access the water and if you do wet a bait you may catch
fish. The wind has stayed down and conditions have been prefect. Fishing
the river early for Trout and Reds using a Rapalla Skitter Walk or a Zara
Super Spook has brought a lot of big fish up for a photo. The area north of
Walton road, Middle Cove and the flat south of the
Stuart causeway on the west side of the river
has been busy with fish. Have had lots of reports of Tarpon rolling around
both inlets, bridges and in the Sail Fish Flats, it must be summer. The only
species not on the catch list from the river, Permit.
From the surf the Blue fish bite has
slowed and the Snook and Permit have made a strong show. The Blue fish bite
has been early then the Snook and Permit take over. Walking the surf edge
casting the Yozuri crystal minnow has been the favored bait for Snook, crabs
for the Permit. Yes, those were Spanish Mac's on the surf edge feeding on
glass minnows not sure how long they will be with us but big fun on a fly
rod. Looking for Crabs for those permit you may call around your local
tackle shops or try the Berkley Gulp crab it's scented and I have had good
reports on them.
Off shore the bait is starting to show,
the old Holiday Inn and a few on the Sand Pile, not there all the time but
moving in and out. As the turbity and the wind lays down the bait will move
back in. The King Fish bite continues strong in thirty feet south of the
inlet, with most action in the eighty to one hundred feet zone. The Dolphin
bite has been good with most fish in the fifteen pound class eating trolled
baits, a few in the twenty pound class and the Sail have been mixed in. Lots
of small Wahoo on down baits and the Cobia just keep swimming up to the
boat. This west wind we have been having will settle the seas but it spreads
the weed lines, look for other flotsam, even a Turtle will hold fish. Time
to get out the binoculars, scan the area, look for flyers, look for any
thing that out of the ordinary.
Till next week, try a walk on the
beach...........................................Henry
Lots
of bait on the beach, form the House of Refuge north to the old Holiday Inn,
these fish are in shallow out to about twenty feet. so if you are heading
off shore you now know where the bait is. fishing from the shore line you
now know where to fish. These schools of bait are going north and south not
east, I wonder what's holding them there. Could it be the Kings, Cobia or
the Tarpon, Snook and Permit. I guess it depends on weather you are fishing
from a boat or the dune but one thing for sure you are in the fish.
Off shore the Kings have been real
strong in 20/30 feet , run north and with your machine you will see the
fish, why would they be any where else, they are hanging at the buffet
table. The Cobia are coming to the boat so have that extra rod rigged and
ready. Capt Joe from Out Law Charters jumped two Sails in eighty feet, all
the fish are up close, where is the bait, up close.
Anglers walking the beach, how about
ten casts and ten hook ups. Fishing in the bait schools, Blue fish,
Snook,Tarpon, big Jacks and Permit on spoons, bait busters, mirrrodine, even
shrimp on a jig head. The fish are holding on the edge of the bait schools,
does it get any better? Plenty of Whiting so do not forget the ice or the
camera.
Lots of Trout this week, whether you
are fishing the Indian river or the St. Lucie River, slot fish no big fish
but plenty of slot size fish. Fishing early in the shallowest and moving to
three feet after the sub has been up. The Reds this week have been north
form Walton to Midway Road, early bite and then they are gone, not sure
where or why they stop the bite but it is low light. Few Tarpon this week
down in the cross roads, few Permit in the mix, not a run yet but it is
going to happen. Snook season will close on the 31 till September 1, for
the moment the bridges have been the location, as soon as the season closes
they will be every where. Lots good size Drum in the river, few Flounder
made the catch list and now is the time for the Triple Tail to show, look
around the channel markers.
Big bright sun up there so if you are
fishing mid day look to fish the shaded water or the darker water, never
caught a fish wearing sun glass's and where is the sun blocker for you???
Till next week go get your bait wet, they work
better.................................................Henry

Here is a photo of my daughter Kailey's first beach snook ever! The fish was
caught and released on a DOA Deadly Combo clacker cork with a 1/4 oz.
Nite-Glo DOA artificial shrimp attached.
The attached photo has now been published in the June 2008 issue of Florida
Sportsman Magazine and appears on page 5 and on page 97 in the Southwest -
Action Spotter. It is also currently posted on the DOA Lures website.
The photo was taken by her very proud Dad who taught Kailey proper handling
of a snook and also how to release it to be caught again! I have been
fortunate to have had photos published in two editions of Florida Sportsman
Magazine myself ( 1 for a pompano and the other for a mangrove snapper) and
now Kailey gets one for her first snook!
I hope you like the photo. I really like how it came out. The sunglasses she
is wearing are arguably the most important piece of fishing gear an angler
has when sight fishing for summertime beach snook!
The photo was taken as storm clouds started to threaten our fishing day but
luckily; the storm never materialized.
Tight Lines,
